Square M.Horníčka in Plzen´

The fountains rebuild the classic water features in the square. In this sense, they are also conceived as traditional and spatial accents, based on the original archetype, although the design uses modern means of expression. They are interconnected by a “complex of underground corridors”…or rather their imprint in the square, which shows what the underground corridors under the houses in the square look like and at the same time their line symbolically connects two existing underground corridors on opposite sides of the square. The fountains in this metaphor represent wells that do not penetrate into the ground, but rather upwards.
The underground corridors themselves are inscribed in the stone pavement of the square as 10 cm wide cast-iron strips, in which short stories by the Pilsen-born actor Miroslav Horníček are embedded.
“The way forward – just like in the Tour de France – leads through stages. Some of them lead uphill, others through flats, others through steep descents. Each has its own difficulties and its own advantages, but they have one thing in common: they lead forward and towards the desired goal.” M.Horníček
All the fountains are the same size, but they differ in the width of the circular cast iron ring that encircles them.In addition, each is dedicated to a different symbol of the Pilsen emblem, the free interpretation of which is pressed into the cast iron bands of the grid.
The north-eastern fountain refers to keys, the south-eastern fountain to the greyhound and the south-western fountain to the Hussite camel. These three symbols are complemented by the statue of the knight Žumbera on the supporting pillar of the “Emperor’s House”, thus figuratively reappearing the whole Pilsen emblem together.
In front of the town hall, in the place where the parking lot is proposed, plane trees are planted.
